Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
