Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
