New research reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
