Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
