The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
